35th Annual Student Research Conference Results

PORTALES—Eastern New Mexico University recently held the 35th Annual Student Research Conference (SRC).  Students competed for cash awards in 9 categories at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
 
The purpose of the conference, coordinated by Anthony B. Schroeder, is to provide students with an opportunity on campus to present their research.

The speaker for the banquet was Jeffrey Griffith, executive vice dean of the University of New Mexico School of Medicine and professor of biochemistry and molecular biology.  His topic was “Telomere DNA Content as a Prognostic Marker for Breast and Prostate Cancer.”

Winners of the competition receive a cash award which was presented at the awards banquet.  The 2009 Student Research Conference winners in Business -- undergraduate (2 panels due to the number of students involved) in panel one Oi Zhu and Liang Qing tied for first, in panel 2 second to Madison Smith and first to Brad Springfield; and Nicholas Fidanzato in the graduate division.  Jerry Holm won first in Communication on the graduate level and Erin Griffith won first in a combined division with undergraduate English.  In graduate division of Communication Disorders Rebecca Wise placed third, Michelle Whitehead won second and Stephanie Hammond-Lebsack won first.  Laura Holder won first in the English graduate division.  The first place award in Hispanic Studies went to Jazmin Loya.  A group presentation took top honors in Humanities & Social Sciences; the members of the group are Heather McEntyre, Yahaira Gomez-Marugg, Laura Forrester and Kristen Zavala.  The Mathematics and Computer Sciences winning graduate presenter is Krishnan Sundararaman and the undergraduate presenter is Clifton Mulkey.  The graduate Chemistry award went to Neela Gamini and undergraduate award to Michelle Hughes.  In Biology the winning graduate student is Kenneth Smith and the undergraduate student is Jody Floyd.
