PORTALES—Although the final numbers will not be official until Sept. 4, preliminary figures show a record enrollment exceeding 4,550 for the 2009 fall semester at Eastern New Mexico University in Portales. The 2008 fall headcount was 4,300. The previous record enrollment of 4,342 in the fall of 1972 had stood for 37 years.
According to Steven Gamble, ENMU president, enrollment is up in virtually every category. Credit hours are also up eight percent. The residence halls are filled at approximately 95 percent capacity, a substantial increase over recent years.
“We believe these record numbers reflect Eastern New Mexico University’s reputation as a progressive institution providing excellent education at an affordable price. Our focus on giving each student the individual attention they need to succeed is obviously paying dividends in recruiting,” said Gamble. “A lot of folks worked very hard to earn this enrollment increase, and I am grateful to each of them.”
ENMU will release final, official figures after the Sept. 4 census deadline.
