PORTALES—The University Brass Choir of Eastern New Mexico University will perform their annual Brass Choir Concert at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 17, at the First United Methodist Church in Portales. ENMU assistant professor of music Michael Ellzey will conduct.
The concert will feature the works of Mozart with “Rondo Alla Turca,” performed by the Clarinet Choir; the Brass Choir will perform Verdi "Grand March" from the Opera Aida, "Funeral March" from Wagner's Opera Gotterdammerung (The Twilight of the Gods), and the "Overture" to Rossini's Barber of Seville; and Ellzey will perform Hummel’s "Trumpet Concerto in E Flat Major."
Ellzey chose the pieces because of the operatic emphasis. “I feel it is important to expose our students to music that is outside their norm,” explains Ellzey.
The University Brass Choir has rehearsed this performance since the beginning of the semester. Ellzey enjoys the feeling he gets from performing and directing the musical repertoire. “It has always been my goal to share my joy of music making with the rest of the world,” says Ellzey.
He thinks the Brass Choir is unique in its performances because “the instrumentation alone is a unique chamber ensemble and offers our students an outlet to perform more challenging music and in an exciting way.”
The performance is free and open to the public.
