PORTALES--Dr. Jean Wozencraft-Ornellas, professor of voice at Eastern New Mexico University, is set to perform her voice recital, “Water Music,” at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 28 at the First United Methodist Church in Portales. Jennifer Laubenthal will accompany on clarinet.

The recital will include songs by Franz Schubert, Gabirel Faure and Henri Duparc. Other pieces selected include “La Regata Venetiane (The Venetian Boat Race)” by Gioachino Rossini, “Sea Chanties” by Celius Dougherty, “To be Sung Upon the Water” by Dominick Argento featuring Laubenthal on clarinet. Two opera arias will conclude the program.

Wozencraft-Ornellas chose the theme of water because “water has been an important element in poetry, music and literature – even seen as the divine source of all life to a number of late 19th century poets.   I chose these pieces with the common theme of water to illustrate the numerous ways that poets and composers relate to it,” explains Wozencraft-Ornellas. She has been preparing the voice recital since August of 2009.

The performance is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Kathi Fraze at 575-562-2377.
