PORTALES--In the early part of December 2009, Lt. Mark Cage of the Portales Police Department and Chief Brad Mauldin of the ENMU Police Department issued a challenge to Greeks on the campus of Eastern New Mexico University to see which fraternity or sorority could raise the most food, money, and/or toys for the children of Roosevelt County through “Operation Santa Cop.”
Many Greek organizations participated and made gracious donations, but in the end the Sigma Chi Fraternity stood alone with the most donations in all categories.
On Wednesday, Jan. 27, the organization was recognized by local law enforcement officials for their effort, dedication and community commitment. "The donations received by the Greek participants greatly assisted the 'Operation Santa Cop' program and was an excellent way for ENMU to become involved with the efforts of the local community. The intent of the Portales and ENMU Police Departments is to continue support of this valuable program in the future," said Mauldin.
According to Mauldin, having ENMU Greek involvement, under the direction of Barbara James, made it a success.
