PORTALES--Jennifer Laubenthal, an assistant professor of music at Eastern New Mexico University, is set to perform her faculty clarinet recital at 7 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 22 at the First United Methodist Church in Portales.
The pieces selected are Time Pieces for clarinet and piano by Robert Muczynski, Der Hirt auf dem Felsen for voice and piano with clarinet obbligato by Franz Schubert, Sonatina for clarinet solo by Miklos Rozsa, Alt.Music.Ballistix for clarinet and CD by Nikola Resanovic.
Laubenthal chose the Schubert and Rozsa selections because of her affinity for the pieces but has not had the opportunity to perform them in a recital until now. She added the Resanovic selection because “I wanted something interesting, impressive and entertaining.” She feels the Muczynski piece balances the other three and complements the rest of the repertoire.
Laubenthal has been a practicing clarinetist for 17 years. She was first attracted to the flute in band but her parents steered her to the clarinet since they already had one. “Sometimes, parents do know best,” says Laubenthal. “The clarinet is rich in range, dynamic and expression.”
Laubenthal believes the audience will be thoroughly entertained with this performance which she has been working on since August 2009. “I think that audience will enjoy the vast moods the clarinet is able to evoke.”
This event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Kathi Fraze at 575-562-2377.
