PORTALES—Eastern New Mexico University in Portales has claimed April as “Sexual Assault Awareness Month” on campus. Proclamations have also been issued by President Obama, Governor Bill Richardson for New Mexico, and by mayors Gayla Brumfield and Sharon King for Clovis and Portales
The proclamation, issued by Steven Gamble, ENMU president, will be read by Judith Haislett, vice president for Student Affairs, in the University Theatre Center at 6 p.m. on Friday, April 9, before the “Just Yell Fire” seminar by Dallas Jessup, 18.
The seminar focuses on empowering young women by knowing their rights, safety awareness, safe dating, street fighting, self-defense and a dating bill of rights.
“We are thrilled to have such support from Eastern New Mexico University, the Clovis and Portales mayors, the governor, and President Obama by issuing proclamations declaring April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month,” said Amber Hamilton, administrator of Sexual Assault Services of Eastern New Mexico. “Local, state and national support is key to helping reduce the rate of sexual assault.
“We are looking to further complement this action and continue to raise awareness by hosting the Just Yell Fire event,” added Hamilton. “Just Yell Fire is a great program that will teach young women how to reduce their risk of being sexually assaulted."
The seminar is free and open to the public.
