PORTALES--Eastern New Mexico University’s Kate Carr is set to perform her faculty voice recital at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 22, in the First United Methodist Church in Portales. Accompanying Carr will be Kayla Paulk on piano, Michael Ellzey on trumpet, Liz Wade and Jason Vest singing duets with Carr, and Chris Beaty playing saxophone for an encore piece.
Carr chose a wide variety of musical repertoire. She will perform songs by Johann Sebastian Bach, Louis Beydts, Fernando Obradors, Richard Strauss, Giacomo Puccini, Libby Larsen and Leonard Bernstein. The pieces span the centuries from the 1700s to the late 1980s.
“As a teacher, I’m supposed to be an example to students and I want to show a variety of styles to keep the concert interesting,” says Carr.
She began practicing the pieces for her first faculty voice recital immediately after arriving at ENMU in September. “I’m a little nervous, but that’s very normal,” says Carr. “I want to show students how contrasting the genre of classical music can be.”
The first-year instructor of voice hopes the audience will discover a new tune they can take with them from her performance. “I hope they will find something they like and will want to hear again,” says Carr. “It’s one thing to be an educator in music, but music soothes the soul and if I can help them take their mind off their day and help them sleep better, then that’s the most important thing.”
The performance is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Kathi Fraze at 575-562-2377.
