PORTALES—Eastern New Mexico University will host former ABC newsman Sam Donaldson as the moderator of a debate between New Mexico 3rd Congressional District candidates Ben Ray Lujan and Tom Mullins from 4:30-5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 9, in the KENW-TV studio on the Portales campus.
From 1-4 p.m. 40-60 voters will meet for a “citizen deliberation” in the ENMU Communication Center to discuss what questions to ask the candidates. Some of the voters will then be selected to ask the questions on television.
The debate will be taped and air that evening at 7 p.m. on New Mexico’s Public Broadcasting Stations: KENW-TV, KNME-TV and KRWG-TV, as well as PBS radio stations.
The event, sponsored by New Mexico First and KENW-TV, located on the ENMU campus, is free and open to the public, but participants must register first at www.nmfirst.org.
“We need teachers, businesspeople, nurses, parents, students, farmers, you name it,” said Heather Balas, an ENMU alumna and president and executive director of New Mexico First. “It is an opportunity for citizens of eastern New Mexico to have their voices heard on the issues important to them.”
