PORTALES--Eastern New Mexico University will host the Fall Choral concert featuring the University Singers and the Chamber Singers at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 15, in Buchanan Hall of the Music Building on the Portales campus. Kayla Paul will accompany the singers.

The performance will include a variety of selections and an original piece by sophomore education student Jared Aragon. Other pieces include "Make Our Garden Grow" From “Candide” and “Behold, I Build a House” in celebration of their first performance in the renovated Music Building. Also, they will perform Benjamin Britten’s "Rejoice in the Lamb" with texts by Christopher Smart, who was in an asylum at the time he wrote the poetry. According to the director, Jason Paulk, the selections make for a “really stunning repertoire.”

Paulk is very proud of his singers because, “They set high artistic standards for themselves and want to achieve excellence in their performing, not settling for less than they can achieve.” The director of choral activities hopes this trend continues to transfer to all aspects of their pursuit of living life and lifelong learning.

The greatest challenge Paulk and his students faced were the pieces. “There are very challenging, strenuous selections on the program. I think the students will feel like they've completed a marathon when the program is completed,” says Paulk.

With this being a full-length concert back in Buchanan Hall, the audience can expect to be treated to “energetic and beautiful singing” according to Paulk. “It is a beautiful space to perform and to enjoy performances.”
