ENMU Sets Annual Autumn Atlatl Throw at Blackwater Draw for October 23

PORTALES-Eastern New Mexico University’s Blackwater Draw Archaeology National Landmark will host the 10th annual Atlatl Throw at the Blackwater Draw Archaeological site on Saturday, Oct. 23. Blackwater Draw is located about six miles north of Portales along State Highway 467.

An atlatl is a slingshot device used to throw spear-like darts.  

Registration and practice will start at 9 a.m. with the Field Round beginning at 10 a.m.   Categories for competition include men, women and children, with prizes for the top competitors in each category.

Other events include demonstrations of flintknapping, sandal and fiber work, spear-throwing and other primitive technologies.

All are welcome to watch or participate.  Atlatls will be available. The competition is not restricted to primitive technology. Atlatls and darts may be made of traditional or modern materials.
