PORTALES – Eastern New Mexico University will host the University Brass Choir’s performance, “A Holiday Concert,” at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 16, at Buchanan Hall in the Music Building on the Portales campus.
The selection of songs chosen by Michael Ellzey, director of the University Brass Choir, are oriented for the upcoming holiday season. “This is the first holiday concert on campus,” says Ellzey. “I decided to perform all holiday music in hopes to propel us into the season.”
The seven songs to be performed for this concert are “Jesu Joy of Man’s Desiring,” composed by Bach and arranged by Ralph Sauer, “Canon in D,” composed by Johann Pachelbel and arranged by R.B. Block, “Es Ist Ein Ros Entsprungen,” composed by Michael Praetorius and arranged by John Palmer, “I Wonder as I Wander,” an Appalachian carol arranged by David Hanson, “Coventry Carol/Carol of the Bells,” a sixteenth century Christmas carol arranged by Robert Elkjer, “Silent Night,” a nineteenth century German carol arranged by Robert Elkjer, “Angels We Have Heard On High/Hark the Herald Angels,” eighteenth century Christmas carols arranged by Robert Elkjer.
Ellzey is exited to show how well the University Brass Choir can do under a tight rehearsal schedule. “One of the biggest challenges we had with this concert is the time to prepare,” says Ellzey. After performing a concert Oct. 1, “everyone in the group stepped up and learned their parts and it will be a great concert.”
This concert is free and open to the public.
