Eastern New Mexico University will host the children’s theater performance “The H.O.W.L.S. Detective Agency  – Helping Out With Large Situations” at 4 p.m. on Thursday, May 5 in the Studio Theater in the University Theater Center on the Portales Campus.

The ENMU students in the children’s theater class, taught by Janeice Scarbrough, professor of theater, create a performance involving children when the class is taught every two years. Students write the script and 27 children from the Portales Recreation Center are participating in this year’s production.

According to Scarbrough, the children are learning “how to work as a team, express their feelings, be empathetic to others and have fun.”

The group started on March 15 started to work on the program and they practicing for one hour on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The children have also designed their own sets for their own individual performances. Scarbrough believes this benefits ENMU and the community of Portales as says, “We are building an audience for ourselves; we are recruiting both creative participants and audiences.  A large portion of our kids are from the recreational center which is a terrific community endeavor.”

The performance is free and open to the public.
