PORTALES--Eastern New Mexico University will host the Brass Choir Concert at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 26 in Buchanan Hall in the Music Building on the Portales campus.
The selections include "Procession of the Nobles" from the opera "Mlada" by Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov, "Allegretto" from "Symphony No. 7 by Ludwig van Beethoven, "Berceuse and Finale" from the "Firebird" by Igor Stravinsky, and "March" from "1941" by John Williams.
Michael Ellzey, the conductor, chose the pieces because "I feel it is important to expose our students to as much variety of music as I can. We do not have an orchestra at Eastern, so I try and pull as much repertoire from other works as I can."
According to the assistant professor of trumpet, "March" from the movie 1941 has surfaced as a student favorite. "A year ago I was introduced to it. It was composed by John Williams, the retired conductor of the famous Boston Pops."
The mountain and forest enthusiast says it is no easy task to create a quality program with a group who meets for only a few hours once a week. "The students step up and learn their parts; hopefully, the concert will be an enjoyable one," says Ellzey.
Ellzey says " it will truly be an evening of music no one will want to miss" with the ensemble, selection of pieces and the newly renovated performance hall.
The event is free and open to the public.
