PORTALES — Eastern New Mexico University in Portales will host the Eastern New Mexico Children’s Choir from Monday, June 13 through Friday, June 17 with a performance for parents at noon on Friday.
The camp lasts from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. through the week and will be in the Choir Room of the Music Building on the Portales campus.
The camp is free and open to children in the third through the eighth grade. Participants can register by visiting www.enmu.edu/academics/distance-ed and searching the non-credit courses for summer 2011. Registration ends Friday, June 10.
Heather Vest, choir director, says that the main focus is to learn how to read music, learn a few songs and how to make beautiful choral sounds. “My plan is to have fun with these kids while being productive as a choir. These rehearsals are full of hard work and laughter,” says Vest.
Vest created the weeklong camp to offer the community a chance to see if the longer-term children’s choir offered in the fall would be a good fit for the children. This allows participants to sample the program without a long-term commitment.
Vest completed her bachelor's degree in music education at Butler University in 2000 and has since worked with numerous choirs in Indiana, Utah and New Mexico, with a special interest in children's choirs and elementary music education.
