PORTALES – On Wednesday, Feb. 8, at approximately 2:29 p.m. officers of the Eastern New Mexico University (ENMU) Police Department were dispatched to South Avenue K Street in front of the Science Building in reference to a multiple vehicle crash, according to Brad Mauldin, chief of ENMU University Police.

Responding police units located six vehicles that were involved in the crash on South Avenue K.

The crash was found to be the result of an intoxicated driver. No one was reportedly injured and no other property other than the parked vehicles and the pickup was damaged.

The subsequent investigation led to the arrest of Clay L. Loya for careless driving and driving while under the influence of intoxicating liquor or drugs, according to Mauldin.

Surveillance footage from the ENMU Campus Union Building parking lot revealed the silver 1995 GMC Pickup driven by Loya pulling into the southwest Campus Union Building parking lot at approximately 2:04 p.m. prior to the crash. Loya is then observed entering what appears to be the lower level of the Campus Union Building.

Loya reportedly leaves the Campus Union Building and enters the silver 1995 GMC pickup at approximately 2:24 p.m. The pickup proceeds from the Campus Union Building parking lot north bound on South Avenue K shortly before the crash was reported.

Loya reportedly submitted to chemical testing to determine the level of alcohol in his body. An initial sample indicated that Loya had nearly three times the legal limit of alcohol in his system," according to Mauldin.
