PORTALES—The Department of Theatre and Dance at Eastern New Mexico University will present William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream at 8 p.m. on Feb. 16–18 on the University Theatre Center Mainstage.
A Midsummer Night's Dream is a romantic comedy written by Shakespeare sometime in the mid-1590s. It depicts the adventures of four young lovers and a group of amateur actors in a moonlit forest, and their interactions with the fairies who inhabit it. The play revolves around two pairs of lovers who move to the forest because Athenian law does not allow them to marry.
ENMU's version, featuring both theatre and non-theatre majors, takes place in the Edwardian era (1901–1910). "It will be a very lively, very physical comedy," says director Felipe Macias, professor of theatre. "We are working hard to make Shakespeare accessible and not stuffy for today's audience."
In an interesting casting decision, ENMU head football coach Mark Ribaudo will play Egeus, the domineering father of a young lover. The play will also serve as a senior recital for several students.
Admission is $7 General Admission, $6 Senior Citizens, $5 Pre-College, and $4 ENMU Students. For ticket information, call 505.562.2711.
According to Wikipedia, an Internet encyclopedia, it is not known exactly when A Midsummer Night's Dream was written or first performed, but it is assumed to be between 1594 and 1596. Some have theorized that the play might have been written for an aristocratic wedding; numerous such weddings took place in 1596, but no concrete evidence exists to link the play with any of them.
