PORTALES–Three Eastern New Mexico University student organizations, VOICES (Voices of Inclusive and Committed Education Students), Psyched-In (psychology club) and Circle K (community service club), are collaborating to provide Thanksgiving baskets to Portales families.

Each family will receive a laundry basket filled with everything they need to celebrate Thanksgiving, including traditional Thanksgiving food, silverware, plates, napkins, as well as candles and Thanksgiving tablecloths.

The three groups have collected just shy of 1,200 items and raised $838 so far to spend on turkeys and other items that were not donated. Every penny raised goes back to the community; none of the ENMU organizations profit. Members of each group have been collecting donations outside Super Save on West 18th St. in Portales during the past 10 days–usually during the evenings.

"Members were inspired by touching stories from community members and generous donations," said Sarah Szymonski, VOICES president.

To finish off the project, the groups will shopping at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 12, at Super Save to buy the remaining items for the baskets, and then will put the baskets together on Friday, Nov. 16.

Members will deliver baskets Friday during the day.
