PORTALES–Eastern New Mexico University will host The Merling Trio in concert on Friday, Nov. 16, at 7 p.m. in Buchanan Hall in the Music Building on the Portales campus.
The concert is free and open to the public.
The trio will perform pieces by composers such as Mozart and Mendelssohn. "I would consider the Mozart to be the appetizer, and the Mendelssohn the entrée of the program," says Susan Uchimura of the trio. "We will be offering some tangos by the Argentinean composer Piazzolla for dessert."
The group, who made their New York debut at Carnegie Hall in 1993, will also teach a class called "The Life of Chamber Musicians" on Friday (Nov. 16) at 3 p.m. The class will discuss all aspects of being a chamber musician, including being performers, teachers, conductors and also balancing it with a family life.
"This is always an interesting class and offers students the chance to ponder what direction they might like to steer their own lives and careers," says Uchimura.
The Merling Trio hopes that they will be able to offer the community the opportunity to hear excellently performed music. "No two performances are ever the same," says Uchimura, "and the experience is created by an audience and performer experiencing the music together."
