PORTALES – Eastern New Mexico University president Dr. Steven Gamble has appointed Dr. David Gerig to be dean of the College of Fine Arts. Gerig, who came to Eastern in 1984 to teach in the School of Music, had been serving as interim dean since the summer of 2000.
"Eastern is very fortunate to have an administrator and leader such as David Gerig," said Dr. Steven Gamble, ENMU president. "He has done an excellent job as the interim dean, and I am sure the College of Fine Arts will continue to thrive under his leadership."
Gerig, who received a DMA in choral music from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1987, served as the director of the School of Music from 1995-2000, during which time he was also the coordinator of Graduate Studies in Music. Gerig, professor of music, has also continued as director of Choral Activities at Eastern since 1984.
"I have enjoyed my association with Eastern since arriving in 1984," Gerig said. "During this time I have worked with some very energetic and talented artists/teachers as a colleague in the College of Fine Arts. I now look forward to continuing this association in my role as dean. The College of Fine Arts continues to have much to offer our students and our region. I am pleased to be able to support their efforts with this new assignment."
Gerig has served as president of the New Mexico American Choral Directors Association and has received the President's Award for Excellence in Teaching at ENMU. A recipient of many state, regional and national honors, Gerig is also a member of the American Choral Directors Association, American Choral Foundation, Music Educators National Conference, College Music Society, and other national honor societies.
The composer of several published choral works, Gerig actively conducts ENMU choral groups in performances throughout the region, as well as serving as guest conductor and clinician. He is also music director at First United Methodist Church in Clovis.
