PORTALES – A total of 15 Eastern New Mexico University employees, representing all three campuses, received Spirit of Eastern Awards on April 17 in the University Theatre Center on the Portales campus.
ENMU-Roswell gives separate Spirit of Eastern Awards, but Roswell employees are eligible for the Chester Haughawaut Exemplary Human Relations Award.
In presenting the awards, President Steven Gamble noted that the awards recognize outstanding contributions, dedication and oyalty to Eastern over a sustained period.
Receiving the Chester Haughawaut Exemplary Human Relations Award were Jane Batson, chair of the Division of Health at ENMU-Roswell; Cheryl LaCounte, coordinator of Student Affairs at ENMU-Ruidoso; and Bill Gaedke, instructor of Education Foundations at ENMU-Portales.
According to Dr. Gamble, in addition to recipients of the Chester Haughawaut Exemplary Human Relations Award meeting the criteria for Spirit of Eastern Awards, recipients are also measured by character, cooperation, contentment, trust and realism.

Support employees receiving Spirit of Eastern Awards (and their year of employment) were: Bonnie Sink, administrative assistant at the University Computer Center (1997); Victor Babilonia, equipment supervisor/interim supervisor of the Natatorium (1994); Gayle Pratt, senior secretary for the College of Business (1997); and Deborah Bentley, executive secretary for Planning and Analysis (1996).

Professional employees receiving Spirit of Eastern Awards were: Wayne Moore, head women's basketball coach (1980); James Pawlak, librarian for the Ruidoso Instruction Center (1997); David Moon, supervisor of Inventory Control (1972); and Linda Custer, accountant in Business Affairs (1978).

Faculty receiving Spirit of Eastern Awards were: Felipe Macias, professor of theatre and chair of the Department of Theatre and Dance (1987); Dr. Don Morris, professor of accounting and chair of the Department of Advanced Business Studies (1997); Dr. Julia Rosa Lopez-Emslie, professor of education and director of Bilingual/Multicultural Education (1981); and Dr. John Olsen, professor of music and director of the School of Music (1989).
