ROSWELL – An ENMU-Roswell student has been selected as one of three in the United States to receive a "2001 Master Student Scholarship." As one of the winners, Nancy E. Patterson received a certificate and a $1000 tuition reimbursement scholarship.
Official notification of the award came last week from the scholarship sponsors, College Survival at Houghton Mifflin, based in St. Charles, Illinois. The two other scholarship recipients are Cynthia Nelson at Tacoma Community College in Tacoma, Wash., Lindsey M. Beckman at Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield, Mo.
After winning the local ENMU-Roswell Master Student Award contest, Patterson submitted her essay to the national competition. Her essay was written on the topic, "What is a Master Student?" Patterson was then a first-year student in Jan Tharp's freshman seminar class during the fall 2001 semester at ENMU-Roswell. Patterson is currently studying to become a respiratory therapist.
"Nancy wrote an inspiring winning essay and we are proud it represented our school so well in the national competition," said Tharp, who encourages students to participate in the annual contest.
The next 'Master Student' competition will begin in the fall.
