Christabell Mariner Named LSC South Hitter-of-the-Week

PORTALES – Eastern New Mexico University outside hitter Christabell Mariner (Sr., Pago Pago, American Samoa/Tafuna High School) has been named Lone Star Conference South Division Hitter-of-the-Week for her efforts in five matches played between Sept. 3 and Sept. 8, 2002. Mariner helped the Zias go 4-1 during the week, as ENMU improved to 7-2 on the season.

Mariner averaged 4.0 kills, 3.3 digs and 1.3 blocks per game, helping the Zias win a mid-week match at Wayland Baptist University, before going 3-1 in the Torneo de Amigas (Tournament of Friends) at Greyhound Arena, Sept. 6-7. ENMU tied for the tournament title with Western New Mexico University.

Mariner recorded 20 or more kills three times during the tournament, including 22 kills in a 3-2 loss to WNMU. She earned 17 digs in a 3-1 win over Adams State College.

She provided a .273 overall hitting percentage in Eastern's five matches during the week. She also registered four service aces in three different matches For the year, she is averaging 3.85 kills per game, and owns a .264 hitting percentage.

ENMU opened the week on Sept. 3 with a 30-25, 30-26, 30-15 sweep of Wayland Baptist. The Zias began the Torneo de Amigas with a 30-21, 30-17, 32-34, 30-17 victory over Adams State. WNMU defeated the Zias, 30-23, 23-30, 30-27, 19-30, 15-13, to complete the first day of the tournament. On the second day, Eastern swept Fort Lewis College, 30-21, 30-19, 30-22, then edged New Mexico Highlands University, 24-30, 30-22, 30-21, 30-27.

Mariner and junior setter Margie Goble (San Antonio, TX/Holmes HS) were named to the Torneo de Amigas All-Tournament Team. In addition, Goble was selected LSC South Setter/Defensive Player-of-the-Week.
