PORTALES – The Friends of Eastern Foundation has recognized the Portales National Bank as its first annual Business of the Year recipient. The award was presented at the Friends of Eastern Foundation 27th Annual Breakfast in the Ballroom at Eastern New Mexico University on Saturday, Oct. 19. Accepting the award was bank president David Stone.
Originally chartered in Elida in the New Mexico territory, Portales National Bank is the oldest family-owned bank in New Mexico. David Stone's father, Douglas B. Stone, moved the Bank to Portales in 1935. Founded by James Polk Stone and a group of area businessmen in 1906, the bank has been a long-time supporter of the Portales community and ENMU. Portales National Bank is the oldest family owned bank in New Mexico.
Portales National Bank's strong history of giving continues today. The Bank is a charter member of the new Foundation Flagship giving club, and each year the Bank presents scholarships in the name of "D.H. 'Tiny' Reed" and "Napoleon Bonaparte 'Boney' Fields," and the "Portales National Bank Scholarship" to benefit Portales students . The Bank also contributes money to the University Fund which enhances Eastern programs and provides additional scholarships. Portales National Bank also sponsors programs such as "Center Stage" which benefits the University's Theatre Department. Other recipients of Portales National Bank's generous support include the Department of Athletics, specifically the Bench Club and Easter's rodeo team. In addition, the Bank has donated two very needed scoreboards at both Greyhound Stadium and Greyhound Arena, and has also provided scoreboards at the baseball field and at the softball field."

Mike Maguire, director of athletics, said "Portales National Bank has demonstrated extreme generosity in providing two much needed scoreboards at both Greyhound Stadium and Greyhound Arena. The bank also supplied scoreboards for the Greyhound baseball and Zia softball fields." He continued, "Community help is always welcome, and we appreciate it to the utmost degree."
