PORTALES – The Sigma Xi Committee on Qualifications and Membership has selected the Eastern New Mexico University chapter to receive the Chapter of Excellence Award, one of the few winners among its over 500 chapters. The award will be presented at Sigma Xi's annual meeting in Galveston, Texas, on Nov. 15-17.

Sigma Xi is an international scientific research society with over 10,000 members. ENMU's chapter performs various services around the community and state. They support the elementary, junior high and high school science fairs and provide the cash prizes. They also organize scientific research seminars.

The ENMU chapter won the Chapter of Excellence Award over many larger schools. According to Dr. Zhiming Liu, assistant professor of biology, the award is very prestigious.

"This award will increase the university's reputation for scientific research and will help recruit graduate students to ENMU because it shows a strong research program," Dr. Liu said. He added that ENMU will be known nationally for the award and everyone in the society will know about ENMU.
