PORTALES – Eastern New Mexico University employees from all three campuses (Portales, Roswell and Ruidoso) are invited to participate in "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People" workshop from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 24, in the Zia Room of the Campus Union Building on the Portales campus.
The workshop, based on the work of Stephen Covey, is free to ENMU employees and will be open to the first 60 who RSVP to Candace Baros at 505.562.4490, or e-mail candace.baros@enmu.edu. Lunch is "on your own," but employees from all campuses will be able to eat in the cafeteria for the special rate of $3.49 (plus tax).

The presenter will be Dr. Ed Roach, vice chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs at The Troy State University System. Dr. Roach is a nationally-recognized educator and guest lecturer. He has served in faculty and upper-level administrative capacities at numerous universities across the country.
Dr. Roach has also been invited to share his expertise in organizational management and student leadership development on many occasions in the private sector and at the collegiate level.
Bio of Dr. Ed D. Roach
Ed D. Roach is vice chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs for the Troy State University System, headquartered in Troy, Ala.. His responsibilities include both campus and System duties. Six vice presidents of Troy State University report to him: the Provost; the Vice President of Student Affairs; the Vice President of Technology; the Vice President for Institutional Research and Effectiveness; the Vice President of the Phenix City campus; and the Vice President of University College (employing innovative delivery systems on campus and at distant sites in five countries and twelve states outside of Alabama). Dr. Roach's System duties include overseeing System strategic planning for the academic and student affairs; and, staff coordination for the Chancellor of the work of the Presidents of Troy State University Montgomery and Troy State University Dothan.
Dr. Roach began his educational career as an English major at Texarkana College and received an associate degree there in 1961. Roach then enrolled at North Texas State University where he earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in 1964 and a Master of Business Administration degree in 1966. He received his doctorate in 1970 from the University of Texas at Austin. That same year, Dr. Roach became head of the Department of Management at Stephen F. Austin University, and, later the chair of the Department of Management and Marketing and director of the Small Business Institute. In the fall of 1977, Dr. Roach took a position as Visiting Professor of Management in Troy State University's European Graduate Program traveling to Germany, Turkey and Italy all within one year's time. He returned to the United States to take a position as Dean of Business Administration and Professor of Management at Southwest Texas State University, a position he held until becoming President of West Texas State University.
Dr. Roach has held presidencies of two universities, serving as President of The University of West Alabama from 1998-2002 and as President of West Texas State University from 1984 through 1990. During Dr. Roach's tenure at West Texas State the university carried out a three-tiered strategic planning effort. It defined the University's mission, outlined its key goals and objectives, and specified areas of comparative advantage. Guided by its strategic plan, the university developed and carried out an innovative facility plan that renovated, upgraded, and converted campus facilities, while simultaneously deactivating unneeded space. Dr. Roach also initiated the University's first capital campaign that brought several major gifts to the institution. Under his leadership, the University successfully concluded a merger with The Texas A&M University System. Dr. Roach served as Associate Deputy Chancellor for the Texas A&M University System from January 1991 through August 1993. Dr. Roach coordinated the Strategic Planning process for the System's seven universities and eight agencies. During his presidency at UWA, Roach oversaw the highly innovative e-campus effort that resulted in the university becoming a wireless campus.
Dr. Roach's academic specialty is in organizational planning and strategy, labor relations and collective bargaining, and human behavior in organizations. An active case writer, his cases have appeared in some of the nation's leading business policy texts, including: Management Policy and Strategy by Steiner and Miner, Business Policy by Glueck and Strategy and Policy by Thompson and Strickland. His central interest is in the area of strategic planning and executive time management. He has been involved in carrying out strategic planning activities in various organizations. In addition, Dr. Roach has conducted time management and leadership workshops for banks, universities, companies, health care providers, and for the Texas Governor's Executive Development Program. Dr. Roach chaired a committee to develop an MBA program as a part of the overall curriculum for a new university being created in the country of Morocco. He has served as consultant and facilitator for a number of organizations engaged in strategic planning. For example, he developed a strategic plan for a small, privately-held oil company in Texas and as facilitator for the President and Board of Trustees of Crow Canyon Archaeological Society, Cortez, Colorado in developing the strategic direction, goals, and priorities for the organization.
Dr. Roach has served as Chair of Alabama's Articulation and General Studies Committee (AGSC) and also served on the board of the Higher Education Partnership of Alabama.
