PORTALES – With the possibility of war with Iraq looming daily, students at Eastern New Mexico University bring the subject up frequently. The atmosphere is very diverse and opinions vary from total support to caution.
Carlos Brugh, a junior business administration and public relations major from Albuquerque, favored war at first, but then had second thoughts. "Go for it George," Carlos said, but then reconsidered. "Why? So we can try to end the threat, but at the same time that threat won't end, it will always be there." Carlos added that the only reason we should go to war is if Iraq is a clear and present threat to the United States.
Robert Bean, a junior public relations major from Clovis, said, "I don't know if I'm for it, but we need to let them (Iraq) know we can come with the ‘realness,' that we're not scared or weak." Robert said that with all the security we have now because of Sept. 11, there is little threat of Iraq harming us, but you never know. "I suppose in the back of my mind there's a possibility of them sneaking in a weapon of mass destruction, which makes you think."
Anthony Brown, a freshman political science major from Corpus Christi, Texas, said, "If we find any signs of them having nuclear weapons, then we should just nuke them in return, because you know that's what they want to do to us. Usually, who ever throws the first punch wins the fight."
Britt Hochhausler, a senior from Albuquerque, takes more of a pacifist stance. "I think it is ludicrous to go to war against Iraq. Whatever happened to the war on terrorism? This seems to be more of a war for President Bush's re-election campaign."
