RUIDOSO – Young men at Camp Sierra Blanca can now enroll in college courses through Eastern New Mexico University at Ruidoso during their stay at Camp Sierra Blanca, according to Camp Director Jamey Grover.
A joint venture between the Camp and ENMU has resulted in college courses in University Studies and math underway this spring for 11 high school or GED graduates.
"Several of our instructors approached ENMU in early November about the possibility of on-site courses," said Grover. "The housekeeping details were worked out in December and early January. Classes started about the same time as regular ENMU classes in mid-January."
Eleven young men are now enrolled in University studies and/or mathematics after placement testing, admission to the University and course registration. Future growth is expected in the on-line partnership.
"We are excited about the opportunity to reach out to these young men with college work that will help them in returning to their home communities," said ENMU-Ruidoso Director Dr. Jim Miller. "These young men have completed their high school diploma, yet often have three or four months still at the Camp before returning to their communities."
Other courses are in the planning stages based on the academic needs of Sierra Blanca students and on other programs underway at the Camp. Plans also include establishment of a computer mini-lab to be used by students at the Camp.
