Being Poet is Painful

"What Happened to You?"
by Bobby Brunson
Campus Bookstore

So, you've asked the question,
"What happened to you?"
As you grimace at this sight
dealt in multi-hue.

Yes, the usual clichés
Are making the rounds;
"I thought she said to stand up,
when she said, 'sit down'. "

And of course, "Does your face hurt?
'cause it's killin' me!"
"What does the other guy look like?"
and, "K.O.'ed in Round 3?"

"…Had a fight with a grinder."
"…Tried to stop a train."
Oh, your imaginations--
having fun with my pain!

An answer is in order,
I have to admit,
if only to curb the rumors
and have gossips quit.

No spat with the loving spouse,
my plow to be cleaned;
No, she is much too genteel
to make such a scene.

In my apparent demise
she came to my aid.
Florence Nightingale, she was,
with cold presses made.

Lavishing her compassion
on my poor wounded head,
for something as mundane as –
falling out of bed.
