PORTALES—Charles Britton, a junior theatre and digital cinema arts major, has been appointed by Gov. Bill Richardson as the new student regent for Eastern New Mexico University. He replaces recent graduate Diego Espinoza.

Britton graduated from Portales High School in 2003, and has been attending Eastern since the summer of that year.

He is a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity, has been a President's Ambassador, and is or has been involved with the University Singers, a student senator for the College of Fine Arts, participant in intramural flag football, soccer, dodgeball, basketball and volleyball, and is the co-founder of the Alpha Omega Theatre Honor Fraternity.

His volunteer activities have included voter registration drives, Relay for Life, and chairman of the 2006 spring Greater Cause/Community Services.

In applying for the position, Britton wrote: "I was born in Portales in 1987. I have lived here my entire life. Thus, Eastern means a great deal to me. Both my parents are alumni of Eastern and I knew I would be attending the institution while I was still in junior high...My goal as the student regent would be to continually generate new discussions and solutions in an effort to support student success."
