PORTALES--Eastern New Mexico University's Hispanic Affairs is hosting a Dia
de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration on Friday, Oct. 31 from 12-2
p.m. in the Campus Union Building Ballroom. The public is invited.

Dia de los Muertos is a celebration from Mexico and Central America. In this
celebration friends and families get together to remember their late loved
ones.

Making an altares (altar) is very meaningful for the remembrance of an
individual. It reflects their life with pictures, music, candles, flowers,
baked goods, and other memories. There will be a special remembrance for
deceased ENMU students.

Patricio Trujillo, an art performer from Albuquerque, will be the guest
speaker. He will discuss the history of Dia de los Muertos, and why the
Hispanic culture celebrates this holiday.

There will also be an "Altar Contest" in which the public, including schools
and organizations, can participate by building altars and presenting them at
the celebration.

Hispanic traditional snacks, Bizcochitos, a cinnamon cookie, and atole, a
warm drink, will be served.
