ENMU Holding Fall Commencement on Dec. 18

PORTALES—Eastern New Mexico University will observe its 107th Commencement Convocation at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 18 in Greyhound Arena in Portales. There are 220 candidates for fall graduation.

The keynote speaker will be Dr. Dale Davis, ENMU business professor and the 2004 New Mexico Professor of the Year, awarded by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education. The topic of his address will be "How You Get Here."

Davis, who received a 1980 Doctor of Business Administration from Georgia State University, has been at Eastern since 1982 when he came from Kennesaw College in Georgia as an assistant professor of marketing. During his years at Eastern, he has also served as dean of the College of Business from 1990-93.

He received a 1970 bachelor of science from Berry College in Georgia, and a 1973 master of business administration degree from Georgia State University. Retired as a Marine Corps officer, he graduated from the Department of Defense Computer Institute in 1967, and the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College in 1966.

Awarded honorary degrees will be Portales resident Kenneth Hubbard, a World War II veteran who was just 20 hours short of his degree at Eastern New Mexico Junior College in 1942 when he joined the Army, and Billy Joe Gonzales, an art major/criminal justice minor who was confined to a wheelchair and was close to his degree before passing away a few months ago.

Other commencement activities will occur on Friday, Dec. 17, including the Academic Honors Convocation at 3 p.m. in the University Theatre for those graduating with honors, and a New Graduates Reception, sponsored by the Alumni Association, from 4-5 p.m. in the Campus Union Ballroom.

Marsha Brandon, ENMU instructor of voice, will sing the National Anthem at commencement, with music provided by the ENMU Symphonic Band.
