Note to Media: Eastern New MexicoUniversity is providing the following clarification regarding the newsreports about a former ENMU employee being charged with embezzlement.
"Of the alleged embezzlement of $138,314, only $1,359 was from an ENMU account. The remaining $136,955 was from the New Mexico Higher Education Assessment Association which is neither audited nor managed by the University."
Also, this is a statement from the New Mexico Higher Education Assessment Association:
"We appreciate the efforts of the Eastern New Mexico University and Portales police in the investigation of this matter. As soon as New Mexico Higher Education Assessment Association Board members learned of what had transpired, appropriate steps were taken to guarantee that this matter was investigated professionally and to its fullest extent. Published accounts refer to funds having been embezzled from a school (ENMU) account. This was not the case. The overwhelming majority of the alleged embezzlement ($136, 955) involved an NMHEAA account separate from ENMU funds. Further comments from the Association, unfortunately, would be inappropriate at this time given that the criminal investigation and prosecution are ongoing."
