PORTALES — The Southeastern New MexicoRegional Science and Engineering Fair will be held in the Campus UnionBallroom on the campus of Eastern New Mexico University in Portales onSaturday, March 12. The fair is one of six Regional Science Fairs heldthroughout New Mexico, and is open to students from the 6th through the12th grade.

Accordingto The International Science and Engineering Fair official rules,students wishing to participate in the fair need not have beenpreviously entered in any other fair, although some of the schools inthe district send their winners. Home-schooled students are alsoeligible to enter, as are students from the public schools, even iftheir teacher isn't sponsoring them.
Thefair has 13 categories: Behavioral and Social Sciences, Biochemistry(senior division only), Botany, Chemistry, Computer Science, Earth andSpace Sciences, Engineering, Environmental Science, Mathematics,Medicine and Health Science, Microbiology, Physics, and Zoology. Thefair is divided into two divisions: A junior division that includes 6ththrough 8th grades, and a senior division for 9th through 12th grades,according to Rosemary Mathews, secretary for the mathematical sciencesdepartment. Fair day consists of four activities: setting up, freetime, interviews with judges, and an awards assembly. Lunch will beprovided for participants and their sponsors.
Winnersof 1st and 2nd place in their categories are invited to exhibit theirprojects at the New Mexico Science Fair held at New Mexico TechUniversity in Socorro in April. Each Regional Science Fair sends twodelegates to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair,which are held this year in Phoenix, Ariz., on May 8–14.
