New Mexico Attorney General Coming to ENMU on April 21

PORTALES — New Mexico Attorney GeneralPatricia Madrid and the Century Council will be at Eastern New MexicoUniversity in the Faculty Lounge of the Campus Union Building at 1 p.m.on April 21 to give a presentation on alcohol. "This Alcohol program isaimed towards college students called Alcohol 101+," says Karen Roachfrom ENMU Student Health Services.

In1978 Madrid became the first woman elected to the district court benchin New Mexico. In 1998 she became New Mexico's 29th Attorney General,New Mexico's first woman Attorney General. In 2002 she was reelected toa second term.

As the top lawenforcement officer in the state, Attorney General Madrid has placedpriority on violent crime prosecution. One of her first actions asAttorney General was the establishment of a Capital Litigation Unit toprovide assistance to district attorneys statewide in the prosecutionof violent crimes, particularly death penalty cases. This unit broughttogether some of the best and most experienced violent crimesprosecutors in the state. Madrid is currently chairwoman of the WesternConference of Attorneys General, an organization that focuses onenergy, environment and Indian gaming issues.

Since taking office she has created two new task forces: Underage Drinking and the Committee on Methamphetamine Abuse.

CenturyCouncil is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to fighting drunkdriving and underage drinking. The Council develops and implementsinnovative programs and public awareness campaigns and promotes actionthrough strategic partnerships. The Century Council promotesresponsible decision-making regarding drinking or non-drinking ofbeverage alcohol and discourages all forms of irresponsible consumptionthrough education, communications, research, law enforcement and otherprograms.

The presentationwill be approximately one hour long with the option to try a programimmediately after on computers that will be provided. All who attendwill receive a free copy of the Alcohol 101+ CD-ROM.
