PORTALES—The Bachelor of Social Work (B.S.W.) program at Eastern NewMexico University in Portales has been admitted to candidacy status bythe Commission on Accreditation of the Council on Social WorkEducation.

"Thisis a major step towards accreditation for the B.S.W. program," said Dr.Allen Stata, ENMU associate professor of social work and sociology. "Candidacy status means that students admitted on or after the fallsemester of 2005 are eligible to be grandfathered into having graduatedfrom an accredited program once the B.S.W. program gains its initialaccreditation--which we hope for by the end of the spring, of 2007. That date would represent the normal length time that a program spendsin candidacy status."

According to Stata, thereis a high demand for social workers in eastern New Mexico, especiallyin the Children Youth and Families Department's protective services, which is often short staffed. When/if initial accreditation is granted,it will allow BSW graduates to sit for the New Mexico B.S.W. SocialWork exam and be licensed as L.B.S.W.'s in New Mexico.

"Job prospects for our graduates should be very good," said Stata.
