PORTALES—The 20-Mile Walk To Fight Hunger that occurred on May 30 was a resounding success. When the final numbers were tallied, 36 participants (33 walkers and 3 cyclists) walked/rode at least part of the way from the Clovis Wal-Mart to the Portales Wal-Mart; of those 36 participants, 10 (7 walkers and the 3 cyclists) successfully made it the entire 20 miles.
In addition to the participants, many local businesses donated lunch for the walkers. Those businesses included: Taco Box, McDonald’s, Domino’s Pizza, Wal-Mart, Subway, El Rancho Restaurant, McCarty’s Restaurant and Allsup’s. Other donors, Clovis News Journal, Portales News-Tribune and Rooney and Moon Broadcasting, assisted with publicity and raising awareness of the serious hunger problem in our area.
In terms of safety, the Curry County Sheriff and Roosevelt County Sheriff provided patrols along Highway 70 to help keep all of the participants safe. The organizers of the walk would like to thank all of the businesses for their help and generosity during this event. Without your help, this walk would not have been a success.
The organizers would like to thank one other group of donors for their generosity. The Clovis and Portales communities were incredibly generous in giving both food and money to the Food Bank of Eastern New Mexico and the Portales Dream Center. In total, the walk raised $2,120, as well as 300 pounds of food to be given to the centers. This will greatly benefit our area and the organizers would like to express their deepest gratitude and appreciation.
Finally, the Food Bank of Eastern New Mexico would like to ask if there is anyone who is able to continue what has begun and assist with making this walk an annual event. Roberto Mancusi, the creator and main organizer of this year’s walk, is leaving for Tennessee at the end of June. If anyone is interested in helping, please contact Nancy Taylor at the Food Bank of Eastern New Mexico. Her number is 575.763.6130.
