PORTALES—Tom Brown, chair of mathematical sciences, and Mohamad Ahmadian, professor of computer science, at Eastern New Mexico University in Portales recently received a $575,552 grant from the Nation Science Foundation to use for need-based scholarships.

The professors spent approximately four months putting together the proposal for the S-STEM grant that will give scholarships to students in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

The creators of the grant hope that it will support the bridge program between the community colleges in the region and Eastern.  Students attending Clovis Community College, New Mexico Junior College and ENMU-Roswell will be able to receive this scholarship, and could continue receiving it if they choose to finish their degrees at ENMU.

An advisory committee made up by the different departments will choose the recipients, however, they are not sure yet how many students the grant will help. The grant will go into effect September 2009, and must be spent within the next four years.

“We are looking forward to working with our colleagues in the physical sciences, biology and math to make the grant program a success,” Ahmadian said.
