Held annually on the campus of Eastern New Mexico University, Portales, New Mexico since 1958, The Southeastern New Mexico Regional Student Research Challenge (formally The Southeastern New Mexico Regional Science and Engineering fair) includes a science fair and a paper competition. This event is one of six regional science and engineering fairs in New Mexico, covering:

  • Chavez County
  • Curry County
  • De Baca County
  • Eddy County
  • Lea County
  • Lincoln County
  • Roosevelt County

Who Can Participate?

The Southeastern New Mexico Student Research Challenge is open to students who are in grades 6-12.

Benefits of Participation

  • Students excel by becoming experts themselves in the area they choose.
  • Science and engineering fairs encourage students to take initiative, learn and become leaders, researchers and teachers.
  • Participation not only motivates students to take interest in science, mathematics and technology, but also stimulates excitement and confidence from the recognition and support they receive from parents, sponsors and judges.

Student Research Challenge Awards

Students win awards by presenting their projects to judges who are experts in that field of study.

  • Top performers earn a spot at the New Mexico Science and Engineering Fair (held at NM Tech).
  • Grand prize winner earns an all-expense-paid trip to compete in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (held in a different U.S. city each year).

The Southeastern New Mexico Regional Student Research Challenge (SENMSRC) is an affiliated member of the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) and the Society for Science and the Public. As a member, SENMSEF receives donations and awards from affiliated foundations through ISEF, such as:

  • Mu Alpha Theta Award
  • National Oceanic and Atmosphere Administration
  • National Society of Professional Engineers

NMJAS Paper Competition

The NMJAS paper competition is held in conjunction with regional and state science and engineering fairs. The paper competition was designed to aid and encourage young scientists in the written and oral communication of the results of their research. Participants have unique opportunities to learn a crucial part of scientific work: in communicating their work to others.

Who Can Participate?

Middle and high school students whether public, private, or home schooled, from across the state of New Mexico. Students can enter the paper competition even if they are not competing in the science fair, but they do have to have a research project.
Students compete in two divisions:

  • Junior Division (grades 6-8)
  • Senior Division (grades 9-12)
