Summer Beading for Fall Fashion: Double-Strand Gemstone Necklace

Instructor Susan Allen has gathered all the instruments and supplies you will need to string gemstone beads together to make a double-strand necklace. Also, please note that natural color variations in gemstones and beads will make each finished piece unique.

Each student will need to purchase a bead kit for $25, which contains all the beads, string materials and findings required to construct the necklace. Students should bring their own tools, or purchase a tool kit from the instructor (includes round-nose pliers, rosary pliers, needle-nose pliers, crimping pliers, wire cutters, flush cutters and bead board) for a fee of $35. Become a Great Storyteller

Join instructor Heather Christensen to learn how the art of storytelling can be used as a form of expression as well as a teaching tool in the classroom, around the dinner table or at bedtime. You may recognize her from Portales' Public Library, where she is the new librarian of children's literature.

Heather welcomes parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, teachers, camp counselors, group home coordinators, youth development counselors and college education majors to join her for this fun and informative seminar. Time will be allotted for discussion of popular and recently published children's literature, as well as reading recommendations for different age groups.

Kids' College

We are pleased that Yolanda Gearhart will be returning as lead teacher for Kids' College this summer. Yolanda plans activities for children in three age-related groups: 6–7 years, 8–9 years and 10–12 years. Please note that, beginning this summer, we can no longer accept 5-year-olds, and we encourage parents of 5-year-olds to consider Dr. Francine Stuckey's summer program at the ENMU Child Development Center (CDC) as a day care option (phone 575-562-2482). Also, we are no longer accepting 13-year-olds (teenagers) into Kids' College.

This summer, daily fun for students includes computer time, art, reading, music, living history, science, physical education and more! Swimming options are still being negotiated (ENMU's Natatorium is currently undergoing renovations), and updates will be available by the time general registration begins on Tuesday, May 6, 2008 at 9 a.m. If the ENMU pool is unavailable, then we can include cool down and play sessions with sprinklers, water hoses and slip-and-slides.

Children need to wear comfortable clothes and walking shoes. A daily backpack containing a swimsuit, towel, sunscreen and refillable water bottle (all labeled with your child's name) is necessary gear. Parents and children should plan for the concluding variety show and pizza party on the last day.

At the time of this publication, the Portales Municipal Schools have agreed to provide free lunches again this year. Any changes will be provided when registration begins. Parents are always welcome to pack lunches for their children if planned menus are not to their liking. If free lunches were not available, parents would be required to pack a daily lunch for their child.

The registration fee this year increases to $70 per week per child. This includes the cost of all regular activities and classroom supplies, 45 hours of supervision per week and daily afternoon snacks. There is no discount for siblings. Field trips will again highlight the summer for additional fees equal to admission charges at those locations. We were forced to increase registration fees for summer 2008 due to federally mandated increases in the minimum wage for Kid's College counselors.

Enrollment is limited and prepayment confirms the spot, so register as soon as possible to secure your child's summer fun. Headquarters this year is the Technology Building with a convenient, outdoor drop off/pickup on the breezeway with accessible curb parking. A specialized, detailed Kids' College Registration Form (available at Distance Education and Outreach) must be completed for each child and will include parental consent and disclosure of any child's known allergies (peanuts, bee stings, nuts, etc.) or other medical conditions (asthma, seizures, diabetes, etc.) for which counselors need to be prepared. Early registration will be offered to students from the summer 2007 class roster, beginning Tuesday, April 22 at 9 a.m. Regular registration will open to the general public on Tuesday, May 6 at 9 a.m.

When: Mondays–Fridays, 8 a.m.–5 p.m., June 2–July 25, 2008 *no classes on Friday, July 4
