Kids’ College Afterschool

Kids’ College Afterschool is a program designed with both parents and children in mind. Kids, aged 5–12, can complete their daily homework and chat with friends, and parents can take comfort in the safe and secure environment provided by Eastern New Mexico University.

Children are to be dropped off in between 3 and 3:30 p.m. at the Jack Williamson Liberal Arts building. For those parents who work on campus, arrangements can be made in advance with the bus company, but once 801 Housing is reoccupied, the availability of Bus 3, which stops at Eastern, may disappear. The City of Portales provides reasonably priced transportation from the schools, to our program, so contact City Hall if this is an option for your family.

The afternoon will start off with a relaxing snack time, 10–15 minutes in length. Once the kids finish, they will move into homework time, where the fantastic counselors will assist the children in finishing all their homework assigned on that day. This saves parents the worry of checking their child’s work after a long day of work themselves.

The leftover time will be devoted to the activities kids have come to enjoy throughout the years of the summer program. Field trips may be planned, depending on the enrollment, and enthusiasm of children and their parents. Pick up time will extended to 5:30 p.m. to grant those parents that may work later, or who may have a long commute, a few extra minutes.

Enrollment is limited and pre-payment confirms the spot, so register as soon as possible to secure a semester of after school fun for your child. Headquarters for this semester is the Jack Williamson Liberal Arts building. A specialized, detailed Kids’ College Registration Form (available at Distance Ed) must be completed for each child and will include signature of parental consent, as well as disclosure of any child’s known allergic (peanuts, bee stings, eggs etc.) or other medical condition (asthma, seizures, diabetes etc.) for which counselors need to be prepared.

Early Release/Parent Teacher Conference Days:
Kids’ College will not open before 3 p.m. on early release days and parent/teacher conference days. We apologize for this inconvenience.

Do not drop your child off at the curb without prior registration and payment.

Register no later than: Friday before each scheduled week of classes (space permitting) at Office of Distance Education and Outreach, (Quay Hall, Room 106).

Bird Watching for Kids

Lukas Cash wants to introduce area youngsters to the various species of bird on the ENMU campus. Learn what to look for as you classify the various birds, and learn the steps to creating your own bird watching journal. Bird watching can be a lifelong hobby, and compliments other activities like camping, hiking, mountain climbing and general travel. Sign your child up for a Saturday of exploratory fun that could last a lifetime. If your family has a pair of binoculars, please bring them. Those without are welcome to share with Lukas.

Chess for Beginners

Chess is one of the oldest and most-historically celebrated games of mankind. Lukas Cash wants to share advice for beginners in this five-part class. Topics will include, but are not limited to, setting up the board, basic movement of the pieces, principles of the opening moves, pawn structure and novice level combinations. Any beginner, age seven and up (including adults) is invited to come and learn by playing.
