Aviation Science Research Tip Sheet

For library research, go to the Golden Library home page. Don't hesitate to call 575-562-2644 or email Michele.Wood@enmu.edu if you have questions or need help!

Golden Library Catalog (first link in the left-most column)
Search the catalog for books and government documents (many FAA and other government documents are available online through a link in the catalog.) Your search may bring up journal titles with online links; click the "ENMU Portales online access" link to go to our Full-text Online Journals (see Full-text Online Journals, below, for instructions)

  • enter your term in the box, e.g., aviation history, and click the Search button (see results below)

 catalog1

  • click a highlighted title link to view a record
  • to obtain print books or documents:
    • if you are in the Portales area, record the call # and stop by the library to retrieve the book or document (ask the librarian at the Reference Desk if you need help)
    • if you do not come to the Portales campus, print or record the citation and you can request the item from us (see Library/Interlibrary Loan below)

catalog2

  • electronic government documents (displays [electronic resource] designation in the title line) will provide links on the screens—just click the link at "Click Here" to access a full-text document online

  • in addition to catalog keyword searches (Keyword is the default), you can also search by author (last name first) or title, by changing the index box from Keyword to Author or Title
  •

Periodical Databases
Search the periodical databases for journal articles.  Although there is no periodical database devoted to aviation science, we do have a number of databases that contain lots of good material in the following areas: aircraft design, aviation history, airport safety, airport security, airport management, aviation law, etc.

Fortunately, all but two of the databases (Science Direct, Westlaw—I’ll show them separately) are published by the same vendor, so they can be searched simultaneously, or individually.  Academic Search Premier is useful for most any topic. You can also search Academic Search Premier, Business Source Complete, Computers & Applied Sciences Complete, Environment Complete, and History Reference Center at the same time:

  • click the Periodical Databases link in the left-most column of the library home page
  • click the letter that begins the name of one of the databases you want to search at the first alphabetical list in the upper right grid of the Periodical Databases page; then click the database name link and enter your ENMU ID# at the remote authentication screen (in the example below, I clicked on the A and then Academic Search Premier database link)
    • to search multiple databaases, click the Choose Databases (in blue font) at the top of the screen and you will see the box below.  Select the Academic Search Premier, Business Source Elite, Computers and Applied Sciences, Environment Complete, and History Reference Center boxes, as shown below; click OK.  You will now be searching all of those databases at the same time.

  • next, enter your search term in the Search box, e.g., airport security (leave the Select a Field index just as it is); you may limit your search by document type, peer-reviewed status, or date, by scrolling down and checking the boxes. Click the Search button.

You’ll see the following results.  Don’t worry about the number of entries.  A good rule of thumb is:  if you don’t find anything good in the first 3 screens, you probably need to tweak your search term (change one of the words, add additional words, surround your search expression with quotation marks, etc.).  If you find some good articles, keep going for a few more screens.  Click the HTML or PDF link at the end of the citation to view an article.  You can print, download, or email the article.  If there is no HTML or PDF link, the article is not available full-text online (request it from us—see Library/Interlibrary Loan, below)

When you are done with this group of databases, use the following two:  Science Direct and Westlaw.

Science Direct

  • return to the Periodical Databases page and click the S at the first alphabetical list in the upper right; then, click the Science Direct link.
  • Enter your search term in the All Fields box on the left, e.g., aircraft design, and click the Go button

science

Only articles that show a green page icon to the left of the citation line (in this example, #4) are full-text online; click the PDF link to view the article.  For citations without a green page icon, record the citation and request the article from us (see Library/Interlibrary Loan, below).

Westlaw

  • return to the Periodical Databases page and click the W and then the Westlaw Campus link; click the Law tab in the upper left
  • Enter your search term in the box—for best results, use quotation marks around your search expression
  • Scroll down and select  an index:  Journals, Cases, Regulations, etc.; then click the Search button.  In the example below, I  entered “aviation law” as a search expression (you would want to specify some regulation, law, case, etc. ); in this case, I scrolled down to select the Statutes and Regulations - Federal index; click the Search button.  In other instances, you would select Cases, for a court case, or Journals and Law Reviews for an article.
  • Click the highlighted title links for full text; print, email or download your material by clicking the icons in the upper right of the screen

Full-text Online Journals
If you are searching for a specific article from a specific journal, check to see if we have the journal:

  • at the second alphabetical list in the upper right grid, on the Periodical Databases page, click the 0-9 link and type the name of the journal in the Search box
    • if we have the journal, you’ll see one or more entries, each with holdings listed—click a database link and copy and paste your article title in the Search box; click any HTML or PDF links or full-page icon links for full-text material
    • you can also "Search Within Publication" in certain database screens--enter your search term in the box and it will search for your topic in all issues of the particular journal
    • if we do not have the journal or article at all, we can try to get an article for you via Library/Interlibrary Loan, below.

Library/Interlibrary Loan (ILL)
To request material not available full-text online, register with the ILLiad ILL system and create your personal ILLiad account. Go to the Interlibrary Loan link on the library home page and click the ILLiad Log In/Register link on the left-hand sidebar.  Click on the "First Time Users" button and register with the system. Enter your ENMU email address, create an ILLiad username of your own choosing, and enter your ENMU ID number as your ILLiad password. Once you register, the screen will open to your personal ILLiad account.  Click the Request Articles or Request Books links, in the left-hand sidebar, to request material. Return to the same ILLiad Log In/Register link and log in to your ILLiad account anytime you wish to use the system.

If you are taking all of your classes online and do not come to the Portales campus, register as Distance Education Undergraduate student. Requested items will be sent directly to you.  95% of articles will be available electronically via your ENMU email account; some may arrive in your ILLiad account--login to your account and click the Electronically Delivered Articles link in the left-hand sidebar.
