GeologyGeology is the study of the Earth and its history. This includes rocks and minerals, dinosaurs and other fossils, physical processes like tectonics and weathering that have altered the land, and resources such as petroleum, metals and water that are so vital to modern society. Geology also includes the study of natural hazards like volcanoes and earthquakes and environmental problems, such as groundwater pollution. The geology program at ENMU is field-oriented and is complemented by intensive laboratories in virtually all courses. New Mexico geology is spectacular and diverse, and the state is rich in natural resources. In addition to field trips taken as part of a particular course, field courses are conducted in the Grand Canyon, in Zion and Bryce Canyons in Utah, and in New Mexico and Colorado. Today's geologist must use many tools and techniques to unravel the Earth's mysteries. Laboratory facilities at Eastern include modern computer facilities, optical and electron microscopes, optical spectrometer, X-ray instrumentation (diffractometer and fluorescence), and complete sedimentation and thin section labs. All geology students complete an independent, faculty-supervised research project that typically combines field and laboratory techniques. This valuable experience is of great importance in graduate school and for future employment. An active Geology Club acts as a center for expanded activities and fellowship. Eastern's geology graduates have been highly successful in graduate programs at prestigious schools across the country and in obtaining employment with industry and government agencies. View the Bachelor of Arts in Geology degree plan. We also offer courses of study leading to a minor in geology, environmental geology, geochemistry and geophysics. |
