The 35th annual Williamson Lectureship on March 31 and April 1 will offer something for everyone interested in science fiction and fantasy. All events except the luncheon are free, and all except the young writers' workshop take place on the ENMU campus. Only the luncheon and young writers' workshop require advance registration.
The activities begin with Writers Reading on Thursday at 6 p.m. in JWLA 112. Authors Ian Tregillis and Walter Jon Williams will read from their current works.
Friday morning at 10 a.m. in the Campus Union Building Aztec Room there will be an informal Q&A session with a group of authors.
The keynote event is the Williamson Lectureship luncheon on Friday, April 1 at 11:45 a.m. in the Campus Union Ballroom. Reservations are required by March 30, and the $8 cost is payable at the door. Books by the visiting authors will be available for purchase. Guests of Honor Michael Cassutt and Melinda Snodgrass will speak at the luncheon.
Friday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. in Golden Library will be the traditional panel discussions. The authors and other guests will discuss a variety of topics including what's new in science fiction and fantasy, science fiction/fantasy film, and the next generation of science fiction/fantasy readers.
The Young Writers Workshop will be held on Saturday, April 2 at 10 a.m. at the Portales Public Library, featuring award-winning author Connie Willis (Doomsday Book, Blackout, All Clear). This event for aspiring teen and pre-teen writers is free, but advance registration is required. To register, contact the Portales Public Library at (575) 356-3940.
Guests of Honor:
Michael Cassutt has written science fiction, fantasy, and thriller novels and short stories in addition to non-fiction works about space. He has been writer, story editor, and/or producer for television shows such as the 1985 revival of The Twilight Zone, Max Headroom, TV 101, The Outer Limits, Strange Luck, and The Dead Zone. He has also written scripts for shows such as Stargate SG-1, Farscape, Odyssey 5, and more.
Melinda Snodgrass has written science fiction and fantasy novels and stories and is the co-creator of the shared-world Wild Cards series. She is now working on the third book in her Edge series. She has also written for television shows including Star Trek: The Next Generation, Profiler, Strange Luck, Outer Limits, Odyssey 5, and more. At this time, she has two screenplays under consideration in Hollywood.
Mistress of Ceremonies:
Connie Willis has received 10 Hugo Awards, 11 Locus Poll Awards and 6 Nebula Awards and has written many short stories and novels including Doomsday Book, Passage, and Bellwether. The newest novel in her Oxford time travel series was published in two parts: Blackout (February 2010), and All Clear (October 2010). Connie was recently nominated for a Nebula award for Blackout/All Clear.
