Hispanic Heritage Month – Detailed Schedule

Sept. 15 – Oct. 15, 2011

Hispanic Heritage Month is the period when people recognize the contributions of Hispanic Americans to the United States and to celebrate Hispanic Cultural heritage and Hispanic culture. Hispanic Heritage Week was approved by President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 31 day period. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988 on the approval of Public Law 100-402.

 

Hispanic Kick–Off Piñata Day

Date: Thursday, Sept. 15
Time: 11 a.m.–1 p.m.
Location: Dallan Sanders Patio (Campus Union Lobby)
Description: Hispanic Affairs will have a table in the CUB Lobby to celebrate the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month. At 12 we will go outside and break the Piñata. Empanada sale begins.

 

Sodexo Stations

Date: Friday, Sept. 16
Time: noon
Location: Sodexo Cafeteria
Description: Eat Hispanic food throughout all the stations to commemorate in Independence Day of some Latin American Countries.

 

"Misadventures in Fieldwork: Cultural Lessons Learned from Fieldwork in Mexico and Peru”

Date: Monday, Sept. 19
Time: 3 p.m.
Location: Aztec
Description: Dr. McDowell, Assistant Professor of Anthropology, will present a plethora of hysterical stories and rich cultural knowledge gained—all the stuff cultural anthropologists do not discuss enough!

 

Quiz Day

Date: Tuesday, Sept. 20
Time: 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Location: Campus Union Building Lobby
Description: Test your knowledge of the Hispanic culture. How much do you know? Win Prizes!!!

 

“Protecting You / Protecting Me” by David Garcia

Date: Wednesday, Sept. 21
Time: 2 p.m.
Location: Pecos Room
Description: David Garcia is a Senior Certified Prevention Specialist, in the Alcohol, Tobacco and other Drug Prevention fields will present “Protecting You / Protecting Me”. This program teaches the consequences on drug use and how it affects communities and especially families.

 

“Free Wheelchair Mission: Transforming Lives through the Gift of Mobility” Fundraiser

Date: Thursday, Sept. 22
Time: noon
Location: Campus Union Building Lobby
Description: Of the hundreds of millions around the globe living with a disability, over 80% reside among the developing world. Millions suffer from a lack of mobility, and struggle daily to meet their most basic needs. You can help! Multicultural Affairs is collecting donations to help the individuals of Belize who are in desperate need of wheelchairs.

 

“Aspiring to Your Goals in Life” by: Dr. Torres

Date: Friday, Sept. 23
Time: 11:30 a.m.–1 p.m. (11:30 pick up tray)
Location: Sandia Room (Presentation has limited space MUST RSVP by Sept. 20)
Description: Dr. Catherine Torres Secretary of Health of the New Mexico Department of Health. Prior to becoming Secretary of Health, Dr. Torres worked as a pediatrician in Las Cruces and was the Medical Director First Step Pediatrics.

 

Music Day/Empanada Delivery Day

Description: Enjoy a mix of Hispanic music from Banda to Reggeton.

 

“La Cocinita: Paint your Own Set”

Date: Tuesday, Sept. 27

Location: Sandia Room
Description: Decorate your own miniature traditional Hispanic kitchen set. Space is limited and to guarantee your own set please RSVP by: Sept. 23, 2011. (Paint will be provided)

 

“How Minorities are Improving in Today’s School System” by Eppie Calderon

Date: Wednesday, Sept. 28
Time: 2 p.m.
Location: Sandia Room
Description: Eppie Calderon, Hobbs High School Principal, will present Multicultural Leadership- An overview of Leadership requirements for education administrators. The presentation will focus on leadership aspects that include: a survey of current ethnic populations, relating to diverse populations, bringing diverse parent populations into your school, developing a sense of belonging to your students and community, and leadership characteristics in a multicultural world.

 

Hispanic Rey y Reina Competition”

Date: Thursday, Sept. 29
Time: 6 p.m.
Location: Campus Ballroom
Description: Compete for the title of Hispanic Rey y Reina. Contestants will be judged in three areas: Talent, Hispanic Knowledge, and ENMU Spirit. Must submit application by Sept. 20, 2011. The winners will receive a $100.00 Scholarship!!

 

“Buñuelos Cooking Class”

Date: Friday, Sept. 30
Time: 11:30 a.m.
Location: Behind the Administration Building
Description: Learn how to make Buñuelos from scratch. Buñuelos are considered the fritter of Latin America. Varying from round balls of dough to flat disk-shaped bread, Buñuelos are an essential dish in Latin cuisine.

 

Guatemala: By Dr. Contreras

Date: Monday, Oct. 3
Time: 2 p.m.
Location: Aztec Room
Description: Dr. Contreras, Associate Professor of Spanish Languages and Literature - will present about the Central American Country of Guatemala and the new summer program that ENMU offers.

 

Kumbal Dance class by Jessica Lavalle

Date: Tuesday, Oct. 4
Time: 6 p.m.
Location: Sandia Room
Description: Jessica Lavalle will teach us how to dance a mixture of Cumbia with Tribal movements.

 

“We Will Never Forget” by: Jonathan Sena

Description: Jonathan Sena, City Commissioner - will present how you can make a difference in your community regardless of where you come from.

 

Puerto Rico

Date: Thursday, Oct. 6
Time: 6 p.m.
Location: Aztec
Description: Learn about the Commonwealth Territory of Puerto Rico, Located in the Caribbean Sea. The presentation will be given by Christian Cruz -Morales, graduate student in the Anthropology Department.

 

Chili Eating Contest

Location: Sodexo Cafeteria
Description: Do you consider yourself a chili eating person who can eat really hot chili? Test yourself by competing in the Hispanic Affairs Chili eating contest as we offer some of the hottest chili in the world. In order to compete, you must RSVP by September 30th 2011. The winner will receive a $30.00 gift card.

 

Movie Night

Date: Tuesday, Oct. 10

Description: Join Hispanic Affairs as we watch Real Women Have Curves starring America Ferrera and Lupe Ontiveros. The movie is based on Ana, a Mexican-American teenager and her relationship with her traditional family as she tries to find a balance between her dreams and the demands of her family. Free Popcorn!!!

 

PPOHA (Promoting Post Baccalaureate Opportunities): Are You Considering Graduate School?

Description: What are your plans after you earn your Bachelor's degree? Unsure, have you ever considered Graduate School? “Guadalupe Vineyards”

Description: Mr. Antonio Trujillo is giving a presentation over the history and development of winemaking in New Mexico. As a former Franciscan Priest, Antonio Trujillo will discuss how the Franciscans introduced wine into New Mexico and how wine has developed through the years. Mr. & Mrs. Trujillo are the owners of Guadalupe Vineyards.

 

“The Conquistador Conquered: The Epic Journey of Estevanico & Cabeza de Vaca” Puppet Show

Date: Thursday, Oct. 13
Time: 6 p.m.
Location: Becky Sharp
Description: The play is based on Cabeza de Vaca’s own autobiography. Shipwrecked in Florida, suffering as slaves of native tribes, Cabeza de Vaca and Estevanico became shamans. After walking 3,000 miles barefoot, Cabeza de Vaca rejoined the Spaniards and became a defender for the native populations. Estevanico, a black Moorish slave, became a scout for Coronado. The play gives another point of view completely opposite to the black legend of la Conquista.

 

Flag Day

Date: Thursday, Oct. 14

Description: Students will walk around campus representing the flags of all Spanish speaking countries.
