Anton Iliuk
Major: Biochemistry Hometown: Kolomiya, Ukraine
Hands-on experience in Eastern’s science labs led Anton Iliuk to pursue a career in biomedical research.
It all started Anton’s freshman year, when he met chemistry professor Dr. Newton Hilliard, who became his advisor and mentor. As a sophomore, Anton already had a job in the lab, preparing solutions for graduate students.
“In bigger schools, only the top students would be able to work in the labs,” he says. “Here, there’s a chance for all those who are interested.”
From the beginning, Anton felt welcome at ENMU. As an exchange student from Ukraine, he met Diana Cordova, Eastern’s Multicultural Affairs director, when she visited Del Valle High School in El Paso, Texas. “It’s friendly in Portales,” Anton says. "There’s a small-town charm that makes you feel at home.”
Anton, who earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in biochemistry at ENMU, plans to stay in touch while pursuing a doctorate in biochemistry at Purdue University. In August 2006, he departed for Indiana and the next step toward his dream of a career in medical drug research.
“I’ve had a great time (at ENMU). I’m going to miss this place, and especially the staff, the school and my Kappa Sigma brothers. I’ll be back for sure.” |
