Recreation Section Manager Assistant - City of Santa Fe

Job Summary: Manages a section within the Recreation Division, such as Sports, Fitness, Ice Arena Programs, Youth Programs, Assorted Recreation (Seniors, Adults, Outdoor) and / or Swim Pools; plans, coordinates and supervises staff and activities of the section.

Qualifications: Education and Experience

A.Bachelor’s Degree in recreation management or closely related field; AND
B.Four (4) years of professional management experience in the operations and multi-disciplinary programming in a community or recreation center, two (2) years of which must have been in a supervisory capacity; OR
C.An equivalent combination of education and experience.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Good knowledge of the principles and practices of: program administration and management; report writing; principles and application of effective supervisory techniques; coordinating and scheduling your activities; hazards and appropriate safety and health practices in the field; budget preparation. Knowledge of basic office equipment requiring computer skills.

Considerable skill in pool operation, first aid, CPR, and operating a computer and computer programs

Ability to Ability to listen, to accept direction, and to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with associates, management local officials and the general public, and to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

3Special Qualifications
Must successfully pass background investigation.

For Assignment in Pools
Must have extensive knowledge of swimming principles, techniques, and methods of lifesaving techniques; of accepted public swimming pool policies, procedures, rules, and mechanics of pool filtration system. Must possess a valid Class D driver's license and obtain a City of Santa Fe driving permit. Must become certified in CPR and First Aid with in six (6) months of hire. Must have Life guarding certification, WSI (Water Safety Instructor). Must become certified in CPO (Certified Pool Operator) with in six (6) months of hire.

Work Environment

Work is performed in an office and field setting, with irregular work hours including nights, early morning, holidays and weekends. Requires the ability to lift and carry 50 pounds. May be exposed to VDT, CRT or UV rays, sunlight, environmental allergens, chemical fumes and gases, hazardous materials and air and blood borne pathogens. Must be accessible by phone or other means of communication as approved by supervisor.

Duties: Plans, coordinates and supervises special functions, events and programs. Achieves the overall mission, goals, and objectives of the programs.

Monitors and administers section budget for personnel, building maintenance, equipment, supplies, rentals and revenue generating activities. Oversees all purchasing for fitness, gymnasium and youth recreation programs and activities. Prepares and tracks annual budget with staff. Maintains operations within budget amounts and guidelines including recommended fees and charges for areas of responsibility. Develops methods to measure, record, report and track to evaluate recreation section operations.

Monitors and administers building maintenance, equipment chemicals, daily maintenance of mechanical structural operations and facility, etc.; direct upkeep and maintenance of facilities, equipment, building and grounds.

Performs program development and scheduling. Monitors and evaluates programs and initiates changes to creatively address the needs of the public. Coordinates and corresponds with outside agencies and resources for proper programming and/or referrals as it relates to assigned program area. Attends Division and Community meetings related to programs.

Performs duties of subordinates when necessary such as life guarding, teaching programs, scheduling and any other daily duties requiring attention.

Makes recommendation for personnel hires; supervises, schedules and evaluates performance of subordinates; develops policies and work standards and assists with timesheets. Maintains confidentiality of all privileged information.

Performs duties of manager when necessary.

Handles cash on a daily basis or as needed.

Monitors and administers health and safety procedures.
