Job Summary: The Grain Inspection, Packers and Stockyards Administration (GIPSA), Federal Grain Inspection Service (FGIS), Technology and Science Division (TSD) is located in Kansas City, Missouri. TSD is responsible for maintaining uniform application of standards for grains and commodities, providing reference standards for FGIS methods and subjective guidelines, and performing analytical analysis of grains and commodities.
The incumbent works under the guidance of a senior scientist and is responsible for performing analytical laboratory analyses, primarily for trace chemical components, in grains, oilseeds, and processed-grain commodities.

Qualifications: Degree in physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.
Combination of Education and Experience – course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above plus appropriate experience or additional education. The total percentages must equal at least 100 percent to qualify for that grade level.
Duties: Conducts multi-step laboratory analyses of grains, oilseeds, and processed-grain commodities according to established working instructions.
Evaluates, analyzes, and interprets laboratory data and reports the results in a timely manner.
Prepares packages of analytical data and test results according to standard protocols for review by the senior scientist.
Monitors, documents, and evaluates performance of laboratory instrumentation and methods and performs routine maintenance and calibration of instruments and equipment as needed.
Performs routine and complex calculations, including those involving statistical analysis of test data.
Maintains knowledge of the operating and calibration procedures for analytical instrumentation and technology, which may include gas chromatography/mass spectrometry, liquid chromatography/tandem-mass spectrometry, high-performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence or ultra-violet/visible detection (UV/VIS), gas chromatography/flame-ionization detection, UV/VIS spectrophotometry, and atomic absorption spectroscopy.
Takes periodic supply inventories and prepares requisitions to maintain supplies of consumables and laboratory equipment.
