Job Summary: This is a 1.0 FTE Intermediate Level Special Education – Life Skills Teacher position. This position is open to any qualified person. Qualifications: Responsibilities include working under direct supervision using standardized routines; directing other persons within a small work unit; and tracking budget expenditures. Utilization of some resources from other work units may be required to perform the job's functions. There is a continual opportunity to have some impact on the Organization’s services.
Duties: Demonstrates an interest in teaching pupils (e.g. conveys a positive attitude when working with students, endeavors to develop a positive self-image in each child, strives to develop rapport with the student as an individual, provides guidance and academic assistance to students, etc.) for the purpose of improving the quality of student outcomes.
Shows an interest in extracurricular activities (e.g. coaching, clubs, foreign exchange program, etc.) for the purpose of assisting with extended learning opportunities for students and building student rapport.
Utilizes specialized instructional skills (e.g. recognizing learning styles of individual students, evaluating students, selecting instructional materials, etc.) for the purpose of implementing the District’s prescribed curriculum.
Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.
Maintains a level of professional preparation and knowledge of subject matter (e.g. pursues continued professional development, utilizes principles of learning, participates in relevant curriculum development, keeps abreast of new developments in the subject matter and/or grade level, etc.) for the purpose of being able to demonstrate a depth and breadth of knowledge of theory and content in one’s area of specialty and relating such knowledge in the delivery of services.
Maintains efforts for continued improvement in profession (e.g. pursues continued professional development, identifies areas of self-improvement, is receptive to constructive criticism, etc.) for the purpose of enhancing skills and teaching effectiveness.
Manages a special and technical environment (e.g. maintains a positive, healthy and safe classroom environment; coordinates the use of facilities and arrangement of required teaching materials and equipment, maintains appropriate records, develops daily lesson plans, provides plans for substitutes, coordinates activities with student’s family, administrators and support staff as appropriate, etc.) for the purpose of facilitating students’ learning.
Participates in building leadership and extracurricular activities (e.g. BLLT, Math is Cool, etc.) for the purpose of assisting in the development of staff and student learning. Participates in out-of-classroom assignments (e.g. training, meetings, etc.) for the purpose of assisting in the development of an effective educational environment and/or receiving and providing information to other parties.
Provides student discipline (e.g. using appropriate strategies to enforce building-wide discipline plans, establishes clear limits for student conduct, show consistency and fairness in dealing with students, encourage students to develop courtesy, self-control, respect and responsibility, contacts family and/or supportive agencies as necessary, etc.) for the purpose of providing for the safety and welfare of students and maintaining an overall positive learning environment.
