Job Summary: Performs routine mechanical work in the repair, overhaul, and preventive maintenance of automotive vehicles and heavy equipment. Performs welding and fabrication work on equipment and facilities.

Qualifications: Must furnish a complete set of hand tools upon employment.

High school diploma or GED certification

Three years of experience in repair, overhaul and preventive maintenance of automotive vehicles, trucks, and heavy equipment or any acceptable combination of training and experience. Experience in complex welding and fabrication work on equipment and facilities.

Valid Texas Driver's License

Safety Requirement
Position requires that city approved safety shoes be worn.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of the methods, tools, equipment, materials and supplies used in the mechanical repair of automobiles and motorized construction equipment and of the operation of internal combustion engines. Must furnish a complete set of hand tools. Should have an ability to instruct subordinate employees. Ability to read, write, understand and follow oral and written instructions. Thorough knowledge of and ability to follow safety procedures. Ability to deal effectively with co-workers, supervisors, and the general public.

Duties: Performs major overhauls and repairs on gasoline and diesel powered automotive trucks and heavy equipment. Approximately 700 units.
Inspects, overhauls, and repairs clutches, brakes, transmissions, transfer cases, differentials, drive lines, steering, suspensions, ignition, fuel, air conditioning, electrical, and related systems.
Diagnoses equipment malfunctions and estimates routine repairs and cost.
Performs routine welding and fabrication work on equipment and facilities.
Responds to road calls and performs mechanical repairs in the field.
Inspects and road tests equipment to be in a safe and serviceable operating condition.
Troubleshoots and repairs extensive hydraulic, air, power take-off, auxiliary engine, and water pump systems.
In the absence of the supervisor, maintains the work flow through the repair section when assigned.
Maintains the work area in a safe, clean, and orderly condition.
Performs other duties as assigned.
